Multilingual SEO for iGaming: Expanding to International Markets
Entering several markets simultaneously is a standard strategy for successful iGaming operators. But international SEO is much more complex than translating content. You need to take into account jurisdictional restrictions, local search patterns, hreflang technical requirements, and the need to build separate link profiles for each market. This article is a complete guide to multilingual SEO for casinos, betting and affiliate sites.
Choosing a strategy: subdomains, subdirectories or individual domains
This is the first and most important decision in multilingual SEO. Each approach has pros and cons.
Individual domains (ccTLD)
Example: casino.fi, casino.de, casino.no
- ✅ Maximum geotargeting - Google automatically associates ccTLD with region
- ✅ Strong signal for local users (“our” site)
- ✅ Possibility to sell or separate a separate market in the future
- ❌ You need to build a separate link profile for each domain
- ❌ Separate GSC accounts, analytics, hosting
- ❌ More expensive to maintain
When to choose: if you have resources for parallel promotion and licenses for the relevant jurisdictions (UK Gambling Commission for.co.uk, etc.)
Subdirectories
Example: casino.com/fi/, casino.com/de/, casino.com/no/
- ✅ All link juice is concentrated on one domain
- ✅ Easier to manage (one GSC account)
- ✅ New languages gain authority faster thanks to the main domain
- ❌ Geotargeting must be configured manually via GSC
- ❌ If there are problems with the main domain, all versions suffer
When to choose: For most operators, this is the optimal start. You can start with subdirectories and move to ccTLD if necessary.
Subdomains
Example: fi.casino.com, de.casino.com
- ✅ Flexibility: possible on different hosting, different CMS
- ❌ Google partially treats subdomains as separate sites (link juice is transferred worse than in subdirectories)
- ❌ Requires separate geotargeting in GSC
When to choose: if technical teams of different markets work independently.
Hreflang: a complete guide
Hreflang is an HTML attribute that tells Google which version of the page is intended for which language/region. Errors in hreflang are one of the main reasons for cannibalization between language versions.
Hreflang syntax
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="fi" href="https://casino.com/fi/" /> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="de" href="https://casino.com/de/" /> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="de-AT" href="https://casino.com/de-at/" /> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://casino.com/" />
Rules that 90% of sites violate
- Reciprocity is required: if page A points to page B via hreflang, page B must also point to A. Otherwise, Google ignores the entire chain.
- X-default do not forget: specify the “default” version for users who do not meet other conditions
- ISO Language/Region Codes: Use the correct codes. Ukrainian - uk (not ua). British English - en-GB. Swedish in Finland - sv-FI.
- URLs in hreflang must be accessible: no redirects, 404 or noindex pages
- Consistency: hreflang should be the same in the page head, sitemap and HTTP headers
Implementation via XML Sitemap
With a large number of pages (10,000+), hreflang control via <head> inappropriate. Use the XML Sitemap extension:
<url> <loc>https://casino.com/fi/slots/</loc> <xhtml:link rel="alternate" hreflang="fi" href="https://casino.com/fi/slots/"/> <xhtml:link rel="alternate" hreflang="de" href="https://casino.com/de/slots/"/> <xhtml:link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://casino.com/slots/"/> </url>
Localization vs Translation: critical difference
Machine translation (even GPT-4) does not provide SEO results because search patterns vary from country to country.
Localization examples for iGaming
| Country | Local request | Direct translation (wrong) |
|---|---|---|
| Finland | Nettikasinot ilman rekisteröitymistä | Online casino without registration (EN) |
| Germany | Spielothek online mit Echtgeld | Online-Casino mit echtem Geld |
| Sweden | Casino utan licenses BankID | Casino without license |
| Norway | Norske nettcasinoer med Vipps | Norwegian online casinos with Vipps |
What needs to be localized
- Keywords: Research semantics in each market separately (Ahrefs, local SEO tools)
- Payment methods: Trustly in Scandinavia, PaySafe Card in Germany, Paytm in India
- Regulatory information: different licenses, links to local regulators
- Currencies and limits
- Support: working hours in local language
- Responsible gaming: local resources (GamCare UK, Stödlinjen SE, Pelirajat.fi FI)
Link building for multilingual iGaming sites
Each market requires a separate link profile in the local language. Strategies:
Finland and Scandinavia
- Finnish/Swedish/Norwegian affiliate sites (Kasinot.fi, Kasinon.se, etc.)
- Sports publications in local language
- Partnerships with local sports clubs
- Forums and communities (Suomi24, Flashback)
German-speaking markets (DE/AT/CH)
- German-language gambling media (Glücksspiel.de, etc.)
- Rating sites in German
- German news portals if there is a news feed
English speaking markets (UK, Ireland, Canada)
- British affiliates (Which Bingo, AskGamblers, Casinomeister)
- UK media (The Guardian, The Sun, Sky Sports - with a real news feed)
Geotargeting and technical implementation
Google Search Console
When using subdirectories or subdomains, geotargeting must be configured manually: GSC → Settings → International targeting → specify the country for each version.
IP detection and redirects
Automatic IP redirects are convenient for users, but dangerous for SEO if Googlebot cannot reach all versions. Rules:
- Never redirect Googlebot - let it index all language versions
- Use cookies to remember user choices
- Always give the user the option to change the language manually
Geotargeting via Cloudflare Workers
Cloudflare Workers lets you determine the user’s geolocation and display content without redirection - the optimal solution for most platforms.
Content plan for international expansion
When entering a new market, we recommend the following order:
- Month 1-2: Localization of key pages (home, services, bonuses). Setting hreflang. Basic SEO audit
- Month 2-4: Create a local blog with 20-30 articles in the target language. The first links from local affiliates
- Month 4-8: Scaling content (game pages, forecasts, guides). Active link building to local media.
- Month 8+: Analytics, conversion optimization, semantic expansion.

Discuss expansion →Frequently asked questions
Do I need to create a separate domain for each market?
Not necessary. Subdirectories (casino.com/fi/) work no worse than ccTLDs if hreflang and geotargeting are properly configured. A ccTLD makes sense if you have a budget for parallel Link building and plan a long-term presence in a highly regulated jurisdiction.
How long does it take to enter a new language market?
First positions for low-frequency queries - 2-3 months. Stable organic traffic from a new country begins in 4-8 months with active link building and regular content creation.
Is it possible to use the same content with translation?
It’s possible as a basis, but each version needs to be adapted to local search demand. The article “Best casinos in Finland” and “Best casinos in Germany” may have a similar structure, but different content, keywords and relevant facts.
